Today has been a rather strange day. It was Holi, the festival of colours, which many Indians, including Christians enjoy joining in with. Anthropologists have long commented on it and their is a classic Turnerian analysis of the festival that was published by Marriot back in 1966. However it is strange for Shimla's Christians this year (and on others) because it is also Lent - a time of mourning; it was doubly strange for me as this afternoon I heard that my grandmother died. Anyway, earlier in the morning we did play Holi with some of our neighbours and here are the pictures.

- As I sit here, looking out to where the partially frozen sea meets the sky, in my mind’s eye I am racing around the breathtaking, winding, hill roads. As I fix on the motion of the water I recall the hum of Shimla mall and the peace of the churches. I think often of all the friends I have left behind, especially my neighbours, the Shimla football crew and the ever welcoming Christian communities. I remain passionate about St Michael's, Christ Church and the wonderful people that constantly, sensitively, remake these historical landscapes through their own worship. I intend to work from here to attempt to create something that does justice to these living landscapes of worship, so that more of the world might come to know something of the truth revealed by these places. This blog began as something quite different, but today it is an attempt to share some of my reflections on Shimla and the people (of all faiths) that I have now left, but who remain with me. I hope to continue conversations that were once begun and begin new conversations. Including conversations that are prefigured by our walking the same streets, though fate never ‘til now presented us with the chance to talk.
